The Original Crew Star Trek Movies
Six movies featuring original crew (Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scott, Uhura, Checkov... ) will remain as Perls of sci-fi movies forever. They are not action oriented but follow hard core science fiction line as art of ideas. Interwoven is Gene Rodenbery's vision of a better humanity forged with light of the stars.
1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) - This Star Trek movie featured The Original Crew in mission to save the Earth from grave threat which in turn proved to originate from Earth itself! Original idea that no bad guys are needed to make life of a star-ship captain reminds me of parable that life can be hard by itself. Digitally remastered material gives you what in first release post production crew didn't had time to do properly.
2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - In contrast to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Wrath of Khan brings classic drama into space. Plot built around personal vendetta brings some eternal themes into depths of space.
3. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) - Continuing story from previous movie, crew of Enterprise went onto quest for lost crew member. This time it was harder than usual, becose as you already guessed right, Mr. Spock was not on board...
4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) - Voyage Home didn't only bring us back to Earth but to 20th Century as well... One of classic motives in Star Trek is is Enterprise crew in our time trying to save us from unknown danger.... Fun with cloaked ship is good explanation why Federation never adopted cloaking on the ships - it would be too much problems keeping crew serious...
5. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) - Meeting gods is challenging task. It turns out that only the best crew might be up to it....
6. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) - Turning Enterprise crew into crime investigators for murder case on Klingon vessel with unexpected villains brings the last movie with original crew.
The Next Generation Movies
Replacing Original Crew captain Picard, Riker, Data, Worf and others, opened new era of Star Trek movies. Space got bigger, ships are faster and better armed, and Klingons are now part of Federation. New arch enemy of Federation is Borg, while Vulcans have hard time getting along with Romulan brethren.
7. Star Trek VII: Generations (1994) - Resolving Nexus threat, new crew meets legendary captain Kirk. Ultimate resolution concludes previous legend for good in this first Next Generation Star Trek movie.
8. Star Trek VIII: First Contact (1996) - This time 21th century Earth meets the hope in Enterprise crew and the most dreadful threat embodied in Borg. Not only they have to save Earth from the arch enemy, but make possible dream of Federation as well.
9. Star Trek IX: Insurrection (1998) - Parable of small nation confronted with greedy corporate oriented race trying to clear them of their magical planet involves crew of Enterprise into moral lesson given by Federation to bad aliens. Not all Federation members are good, and it is a short story of heroism and how few individuals can change outcome against overwhelming odds.
10. Star Trek X: Nemesis (2002) - The last TNG movie brings second arch enemy - Romulans who used embodiment of Federation in Picards clone to destroy it. Lots of Gothic scenes from Romulan starships make this movie visually different.
New Crew Star Trek Movie
11. Star Trek (2009) - Not only new crew, but entirely different course of history awaits us after this movie. Using alternate reality caused by space-time tempering JJ. Abrams promises us fresh new sequels based on shiny scenes of new Enterprise and not so shiny past of main characters Kirk and Spock. Both of them are now more human than they were ever before. Kirk is still in western movie style bar combat, but Sulu brings us high powered martial arts combat and this will be welcome change. Also, away team is now being used as tactical unit that substitutes unpersonalized long distance shots between two star ships. But greatest surprise is Spock who now has one really human line being more human-vulcan than vulcan-human child....
